01

The idea

Some complexity belongs to the task itself. Simplifying an interface often means moving that work into the system or its implementation. Tesler’s law is a design perspective, not a measurable conservation law.

02

Why it matters

A visually simple screen can still force users to do difficult calculations or remember hidden rules. Removing controls does not necessarily remove effort.

03

A real-world example

A scheduling tool converts time zones automatically while showing each participant’s local time and allowing the organizer to check the interpretation.

04

What this doesn’t mean

Do not automate away necessary control or hide uncertainty. Some users need to inspect and correct the system’s assumptions.

Bring it to your next review

Try this.

List the work currently done by the user. Automate reliable steps and leave clear explanations and overrides for consequential decisions.
